local food to try
There are many local tavernas offering great food. Try a meze which is often great value for money as it lets you sample lots of the local dishes. We'd particularly recommend this at Gabriels Tavern in Kouklia. You can also sample local food at the Pithari Tavern on the resort at the Village Square.
Be sure to try the local houmous - if you're at the Papantoniou Supermarket in Pissouri or in Kato Paphos, buy some from the deli counter - it's delicious and much better value than the pre-packed sort.
Halloumi is the local cheese which Cyprus is famous for - try some grilled or fried - it retains its shape and is a great addition to any salad.
Souvlaki is very popular - try some at the kebab shop at the Village Square. A spin-off from the famous Greek fast food dish, the Cypriot style souvlaki consists of small chunks of charcoal-grilled meat on a skewer, and a large amount of fresh salad filling. The pita bread used is thinner and larger than the Greek version, and usually contains a pocket to hold the ingredients, rather than wrapping the filling in the traditional way. The meat is commonly pork, lamb or chicken. However, vegetarian options such as mushroom and halloumi are also sought after choices. The sauces popular with Greek souvlakis are a rare feature of the Cypriot version. On the island they are instead commonly served with lemon quarters, a pickled green chili pepper and piccalilli on the side.
For meat, it's very reasonable to buy local chicken, pork, lamb and beef - usually much cheaper than in the UK. Pick some up at the butcher's counter in Papantoniou in Pissouri. If you fancy having a bbq pack of meat delivered to your door, call Butcher Boy in Paphos. They do very generous bbq packs at great prices and will deliver by afternoon if you call in the morning. Checkout their list at http://butcherboy.eu/bbq-packs/. Call to order on 0035726944206.
Salads are always a great option for a quick lunch. The local tomatoes never look as 'perfect' as the ones you get in UK supermarkets, but they're a million times better tasting! Simply slice a few up with some sliced onions and dress with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar and add some crumbled feta for a quick, tasty dish. Also try the local olives - you can get them from the deli counter (Papantoniou again!) filled with a variety of delicious fillings.
There are many other local dishes well worth sampling... see this advice from the Culture Trip website for more ideas - https://theculturetrip.com/europe/cyprus/articles/the-10-best-foods-in-cyprus/.
